Workshop Description:

This workshop is an experimental art-making session held on the grounds of Long Way Homestead. In this six hour session, we will use cultivated and foraged dye plants to create works on paper and fabric, in response and-or collaboration with sites and beings on the fibre farm.

In the first part of the workshop we will extract pigments from dye plants and create inks.
With these inks, participants will create small works on paper engaging in collaborative drawing exercises and self led experiments.

In the second part of the workshop we will explore two resist dyeing techniques; mordant painting and tying/sewing to create surface designs on fabric. Participants will then dye their fabrics in pots of local colour, including an Indigo vat.

In this workshop you will:

-Extract plant pigments and turn them into ink -Engage in mark-making exercises that encourage play and collaboration-Learn a couple of resist dyeing techniques and the basics of natural dyeing-Hear a presentation by Anna Hunter, owner, on whole systems approach to textile production in the Prairies-Learn how to make an Indigo vat from Anna Hunter -Meet the sheep!-Get access to Long Way Homestead shop on-siteHOW TO REGISTER? ESPAÑOL
The gift you have just received is made of roses collected by me from flower shops in Winnipeg Manitoba after they were deemed no longer fit for sale.

The sculpture is made of a dried rose bouquet, wrapped in silk dyed using rose petals, a mailing tube and labels.
The bouquet of roses is wrapped in fabric and tied snug. I was thinking about embalming practices while doing it, specifically about the ancient Andean practice of wrapping the dead in specially crafted textiles before burial. At the same time, tying the roses snug reminded me of swaddling babies.

This method of working was chosen to honour the spirit of the roses. The plants lived one day long ago and I seek to extend their life as an art object and gift to you.

These flowers were grown, transported, displayed, inspected, exported or imported by you at some point. They were grown in South America, travelled through Miami, Florida to Canada in refrigerated airplanes and trucks, moving through the international supply distribution chain. I give them back to you as a gift to thank you and to honour your labour in the cut-flower industry.
With this gift, I invite us to imagine a new way of relating to roses and to each other. I aim to conjure relationships that are anchored in reciprocity. Roses are a living being, not a mere commodity. How do they love us and how can we love them back? how can we love each other?
I invite you to share your ideas with me, please consider sending me a message:

The Rose Marks it’s Path
Photo essay
2021
These photos attempt at depicting the experience of working with roses as a collaborator. As an artist, I approach the material acknowledging it’s personhood. This work engages with pan-american Indigenous ideas of relationality and reciprocity.

A prited version of this photo essay with accompanying texts is currently in production thanks to the support of Platform Centre for photographic and Digital arts.

Giving and Taking with Dump Roses
Ongoing collaborative project

This project consist of naturally dyeing sessions where I transform garments in disuse using dump roses.

I gave a talk about this body of work as part of the Manitoba Craft Council’s Fall Talks.

MTCN is the only love poem that I write was sparked by recurring visits in Winnipeg to money transfer agents, where the diaspora meets to send money back home. On the counters of these service locations, economic oppression and agency collide. The audio piece and textile sculpture seek to explore this dynamic and riff off the elements of a monetary transaction, collaging them and reinterpreting them in search of softness.
The audio is a recording of the artist reciting monetary transfer control numbers (MTCN) like an incantation. This conjuration is interrupted by text written by the artist unspooling the stories contained in each transaction. The fabric piece that accompanies the sound seeks to reflect the feelings found in the stories.

This work was the result of multiple material experiments, as part of the Cartae Open School program. The main goal was to play with opossing properties, such as rigid-and-soft, dry-and-wet using materials related to textile production.
I chose to thread naturally dyed wool through an MDF pegboard creating a soft grid. The wool is dyed using cochineal that produced a number of pinks. The second pieces is a wet felted wool rug in the shape of a puddle. Both allude to the body and how it moves in space, the objects are present as barriers, or places where one can get stucked.

“Que Huevada” is a slang word used acros Latin America, that to me describes useless things or situations that are laughably frustrating. The style of the typeface I used references hand painted signs in Peru that fill the visual landscape of urban centres. This style is known as ‘chicha’.
This work reflects on regionality and specificity and how things get lost in translation. More so, how certain things are not meant to be for everyone and the power of exclusion. I thought about parties where not everyone is invited and how funny it would be to throw one in celebration of barriers that impede clear understanding.

Placeholder explores coexisting multiple identities, strategies of survival and complex relationships with the land that immigrants develop in their host country. In this woven panel, the transformation that immigration yields is reflected in the cotton used. Dyed with the bark of a native Bur Oak tree and buried in mud, the material used to weave Placeholder is infused with the properties of Manitoban soil. These strips have moved over and under wool from Canada and Peru, creating a fabric reflective of harmonious dissonance.
